"Palestinian streets are often lined with pasted up 'martyr' posters honouring those who have died in the ongoing conflict with Israel. Within hours of someone's death, posters of the vicitm's face are plastered repeatedly over walls, shop fronts and public buildings. Although the faces change, the posters are a permanent feature of the visual landscape of West Bank cities. They can be controversial and are sometimes seen as glorifying death and romanticising conflict. I found it quite poignant and tragic to see the old, faded posters being pasted over with images of newly deceased young 'revolutionary heroes'.
This piece aims to question the endless cycle of violence and premature death by starkly contrasting the background with a pregnant passer-by in the foreground. Do the posters suggest the inevitable future of her unborn child, or will they be able to find a different path?"
