"In a land with little natural greenery and limited space, gardens are rare. But balconies are everywhere. As I walked through the streets of Ramallah, Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, I was struck by how much was revealed about an apartment's inhabitants by a quick glance at their balcony - the life within seemed to have been condensed and then presented in a 2 square metre display. Gender and age were suggested by the clothes drying, family and lifestyle by plastic toys and small bikes or hookah pipes and speakers, and ethnicity and/or political views by the omnipresent flags draped over the railings - the more prominently displayed the more passionate the politics."
